“You’re so lucky to live by the sea.”

I have been told.

To which, I reply;

“I live in London’s sewers –

The River Thames”

In 1953,

It tried to eat us whole.

And so, we built The Wall.

Grey concrete slabs hold us captive.

All can be seen from the Promised Land,

of Kent.

If you go down to the river,

Observe the walls as they speak.

“Terry loves Kerry” they say,

“RIP Sid Vicious” they cry,

“Cum” they grin,

“Canvey is England’s Lourdes.”
